Common Questions
There are many factors that determine how quickly a car charges. AC chargers are normally bewteen 7.5 and 22kw, with home chargers being 7.5kw. DC chargers range from 40Kw to 400Kw which you will find at charging hubs and workplaces.
A home charger at 7.5Kw will charge an average car from 10% to 100% in 8 hours.
A commercial charger at 22Kw will charge the same car in about 5 hours.
HOWEVER this is if the charger can run at full power and if it is sharing its load with other services (getting confusing?) See our video explaining this more here…..
ALSO most cars produced will only charge at 11Kw as it is determined by the inverter onboard your EV (again see the video explaining this more here)
DC charging also makes a big difference, however can be affected by similair problems as above, with DC most vehicles charge between 75-150Kw with some cars capable of 275kW meaning at 150Kw the same car above would be 80% charged in 15 minutes.
In theory yes very much so as domestic rates are cheaper than commercial electrical rates. Under new guidlines by the government (Called OCPi) any charging you pay for even within a workplace must be clearly defined for people to see before they connect.
There is no specific cost we can demonstrate but if you are charging at home, you may charge slower but you will save money.
You can calculate the power consumption of a car based on the following;
Battery size (in kilowatt-hours) x the Average number of km driven per day / 100 = Kilowatt-hours per km miles
If you drive around 30 km per day and you have a 40-kilowatt-hour battery, the calculation would look like this:
40 kilowatt-hours x 30 km / 100 = 12 kilowatt-hours per 100 km.
The calculation indicates that your electric car utilises 12 kilowatt-hours of energy for every 100 km you drive. The numbers may change on a variety of factors, but this gives you a clearer idea of how much energy your Electric Vehicle uses.
There is no specific answer and under the new governement guidelines the OCPi regulations require public charging to display clearly what the charge rates are so that you know before you charge what you expected costs are to be.
Be vigilant in the charge stations you use, the average is approx 76pKw, with prices ranging from 30p to 94.5p!
